The National Library "Vittorio Emanuele III"
The National Library "Vittorio Emanuele III" in Naples is a public state library depending upon the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività culturali - Direzione Generale per i beni librari e gli istituti culturali (Ministry of cultural heritage and activities - General Direction for the printed heritage and the cultural institutions). It is one of the largest libraries in Italy with around 19.000 manuscripts, 4.563 incunabula, 1.792 Herculaneum papyri, around 1.800.000 printed volumes and over 8.300 periodicals.
According to the new Library Rules (Regolamento DPR July 5th 1995, no. 417), the public state libraries aim at: a) gathering and preserving the Italian printed production at the national and local level; b) preserving, enhancing and promoting the historical collections; c) acquiring the published production on the basis of the specific collections and considering the users' needs: d) promoting the knowledge of the collections through bibliographic information and ensure the circulation of items. Such institutional functions are achieved also through scientific and cultural activities, sometimes in collaboration with other scientific institutions, such as exhibitions, meetings, lectures, edition and publication of catalogues, bibliographies etc.

The BNN is located in one branch of the Naples Royal Palace.

Directions to the library

From the Central Station (Stazione Centrale-Piazza Garibaldi) take bus no. 2, get off at San Carlo – Piazza Trieste e Trento
From Mergellina Station take bus no. 3 get off at San Carlo – Piazza Trieste e Trento
From Beverello Mall walk towards Piazza Municipio > proceed to V. Emanuele > via San Carlo > Piazza Trieste e Trento
From the airport take the shuttle Alibus, get off at Piazza Municipio, proceed to V. Emanuele > via San Carlo > Piazza Trieste e Trento
From the outskirts – Western area take the Circumvesuviana Sorrento-Naples line get off at the Central Station (Piazza Garibaldi)
From the outskirts – Eastern area take the Cumana line Torregaveta-Montesanto get off at Montesanto Station > walk through via Pignasecca towards Piazza Carità > via Toledo > Piazza Trieste e Trento

Accessibility

Coming to the library by public transportation

From the Central Station: there are buses with elevator platforms that go to the Teatro San Carlo, which is 200 meters away from the Palazzo Reale entrance to the library; a cobble stone street that is slightly inclined must then be traversed.
From Molo Beverello
: there is no public transportation for the physically challenged; the library is around 500 meters away; the street is inclined and paved with cobble stones along its final section.
From Capodichino airport: the buses that go to Piazza Municipio, which is 300 meters away from Palazzo Reale, are not specially equipped for the physically challenged
From the entrance of Palazzo Reale to the entrance of the library: the walkway is about 250 meters long, and is paved with cobble stones.

Coming to the library by private transportation

Access to Palazzo Reale: there is limited access for authorized vehicles which display a parking permit as described in DPR 503/96; once inside, there is parking available near the elevator access to the library.

Accessibility of library facilities
The sections open to the public are all accessible, except for the Papyri Section, not accessible at the moment. A number of elevators give access to the various floors. To use them please contact the library personnel.
The Brancaccio section, located in a different building, has an elevator and is accessible only for the reading room.

Accessible restrooms are on the ground floor at the entrance of the library. To use them please contact the library personnel

The library is open to the public all the year round excluding Sundays and holidays

Sat. 8.30-13.30


During such periods, the users can enter the library, use the card and on-line catalogues, the reference and reading rooms.

Admission
In order to be admitted to the BNN users have to:

- be over 16 (for exceptions see go to Regolamento)
- produce evidence of identification
- leave bags, books and publications in any form at the cloakroom take and keep the "carta d'entrata" (entrance card)
